Mission

Earth Expeditions

Earth Expeditions is jointly offered by Project Dragonfly at Miami University, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, and partners worldwide. To build an alliance of individuals with first-hand knowledge of inquiry-driven, community-based learning for the benefit of ecological communities, student achievement, and global understanding.

Earth Expeditions envisions each person as an ambassador who creates as well as transmits knowledge, who promotes authentic dialogue at all levels of society, and who inspires others to do the same. By adopting participatory models of education, schools become centers of investigation, students engage more deeply in their studies, and communities achieve higher levels of self-determination.

Since its creation of Dragonfly magazine in 1994, Project Dragonfly has gained a sterling reputation in education and has reached millions of children, parents, and teachers. The project began with the launch of the first national publication to feature children's investigations, and now includes a national badge program for the Boys &amp Girls Clubs of America; award-winning web sites; graduate-credit teacher workshops; and a national PBS television series, DragonflyTV. Dragonfly's inquiry-driven learning materials have won the Parents' Choice Gold Medal and two Ed Press Awards. The National Science Foundation has called Dragonfly: "A true innovation," and "a model of what active learning should be."

Project Dragonfly reaches millions of people worldwide through inquiry-driven education, participatory media, public exhibits, and international partnerships. The project began with the launch of the first national magazine to feature children’s investigations and discoveries. Published by the NSTA, Dragonfly magazine upended widely held assumptions about the role of children in science by publishing their research alongside the research of professional scientists. The magazine evolved into the Emmy-winning PBS children’s television series DragonflyTV. Produced by TPT public television. DragonflyTV broadcasts the investigations by youth to a national audience. Project Dragonfly initiated Earth Expeditions, Wild Research, and exciting new Master’s degree programs: the Global Field Program and Integrative Science Program. The National Science Foundation has called Dragonfly: "A true innovation," and "a model of what active learning should be." See www.ProjectDragonfly.org.

An indigenous African conservation initiative, the African Conservation Centre brings together the people and skills needed to build East Africa 's capacity to conserve wildlife through sound science, local initiatives and good governance. East Africa's great wildlife spectacle co-existed with people for millennia unlike elsewhere in the world. However, population growth, poverty, alterations in land use and poaching have halved wildlife numbers. The future of Africa's wildlife depends on safeguarding critical space both outside and inside parks. The ACC works towards this goal by winning local support and gaining national and international backing for conservation initiatives.

The African Conservation Fund was founded in 2003 by a small group of East Africans, Britons and Americans—people who have lifelong commitments to the conservation of East Africa’s wildlife and cultures. Many of the projects the ACF support's are carried out by their partner, the 12-year-old Nairobi-based African Conservation Centre. The programs they support through the ACC succeed in helping to nurture locally created and supported conservation that is saving large landscapes for the great migratory herds, while also improving people’s lives.

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center was started in 1983, as a last ditch effort to provide a home for a collection of wild animals which had been used in making documentary films about tropical forests.  Shortly after the backyard "zoo" began, it was quickly realized that its local visitors were unfamiliar with different species of Belizean wildlife. Today, The Belize Zoo is settled upon 29 acres of tropical savanna and exhibits over 125 animals native to Belize. The Tropical Education Centre is an 84-acre site set in unspoiled savannah land located adjacent to the Belize Zoo.

The Cheetah Conservation Fund conducts research and implements strategies for cheetah conservation in the cheetah's natural habitat. From its Namibian base, CCF works with countries that have wild cheetah populations. CCF works to create and manage long-term conservation strategies for the cheetah throughout its range; develop and implement better livestock management practices, eliminating the need for ranchers to kill so many cheetah; maintain conservation education programs for local villagers, ranchers, and school children; and continue intensive scientific research in cheetah genetics, biology, and species survival.
